Featured Hike of the Week ~ Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail
Highlights of the Hike: This beautiful trail winds around hills and cliffs at the very end of the Ko’olau mountain range. The views alternate between vast blue ocean, dramatic lava rock cliffs, the iconic Rabbit Island, and gorgeous coastlines of the east and south sides of the island.
Hours: 7AM to 6:45PM, Free Parking Available.
Best Times to Hike: Early morning or late afternoon. Thereʻs no shade along the trail, and the midday sun can be brutal! Check out the moon phase calendar – the hike provides a spectacular viewpoint to watch the moon rise over the ocean. And if youʻre here between November – March, take a closer look at the waves and whitecaps. Some of them might be humpback whales spouting or breaching!
Parking: Thereʻs a large, free parking lot at the base of the hike, but if you intend to stay beyond the closing hours, park outside the parking lot so you wonʻt get locked in.
Safety / Skill Level: The hike is uphill and can provide a great workout, but the smooth paved road means that you can even bring strollers safely to the top. On average, it takes between 30 – 45 minutes to reach the top, but make sure to leave time to enjoy the views. Risks on this hike include dehydration and sunburn. Remember to bring plenty of water and sun protection for yourself and any companions – especially dogs.
